Transforming the Cedar: The Future of the Austin Whitewater Project
At our most recent Voice of Business meeting, the community gathered to receive a comprehensive update on one of the most transformative initiatives in our region’s history: the Austin Whitewater on the Cedar project.
Led by project lead Nathan Smit and supported by City of Austin Assistant City Engineer Andy Sorenson, the presentation detailed a vision that goes far beyond recreation. This project is a multi-faceted approach to economic development, environmental stewardship, and community branding.

A Vision Rooted in Community
The Austin Whitewater Project traces its origins back to the goals established during Vision 2020. The primary objective is the creation of the Austin River District, anchored by what will be the very first whitewater park in the state of Minnesota. By transforming the riverfront into a destination for free outdoor recreation, the project aims to help Austin attract and retain a vibrant workforce and resident base.
Economic and Environmental Impact
The presentation highlighted the significant "4 to 1" ratio often seen with whitewater park economic impacts. For Austin, this translates to:
Tourism Growth: An estimated $2 million+ in annual tourism impact, specifically tapping into the nearby Twin Cities and Rochester markets.
Development: The project serves as a catalyst for new riverfront businesses, housing, and expanded park facilities.
Safety and Restoration: A critical component of the plan is the removal of the dangerous low-head dam and old mill remnants. This not only makes the river safer for the public but also improves water quality and facilitates healthier fish migration.
Preserving History
While the project looks toward the future, it remains deeply committed to Austin’s heritage. A key priority is the long-term preservation of the Austin Mill Pond, ensuring that this historic landmark remains a centerpiece of our community for generations to come.

What’s Next?
With the feasibility study and preliminary designs now complete, the project is moving into a critical phase. 2026 and 2027 will focus on permitting and final design work. If timelines hold, the community can expect to see construction begin in late 2027 or 2028.
The Austin Whitewater on the Cedar is more than just a park; it is a commitment to a sustainable, exciting, and prosperous future for our city. We look forward to seeing this vision take flight and seeing the positive ripples it will create throughout the Austin business community.
