Celebrating One Year of Innovation: The Riverland Community College LAND Lab in Austin, MN

At the Austin Area Chamber of Commerce, we frequently talk about the power of vision, collaboration, and community driven momentum. One year ago, Riverland Community College took a monumental step forward in aligning local education with the future of our regional economy by launching the RiverLAND Lab.

Yesterday, representatives from the Austin Area Chamber of Commerce, local business leaders, community partners, and members of our Chamber Ambassadors gathered at Riverland Community College to commemorate the one year anniversary of the RiverLAND Lab. With giant scissors in hand, we officially marked a year of growth, learning, and innovation with a celebratory ribbon cutting ceremony.

If you missed our Facebook Live coverage, here is a detailed recap of why this initiative matters to our business community, our students, and the greater Austin region.

Bridging Education, City, and County Goals

The RiverLAND Lab, an acronym with “LAND” intentionally capitalized to emphasize its roots in hands-on agricultural science, represents much more than a physical space on campus. As Dr. Okechukwu Ukaga shared during yesterday’s ceremony, the creation of the RiverLAND Lab coincided with a comprehensive vision shared by Mower County, the City of Austin, and local educational partners.

“The LAND Lab is actually something that we have been trying to do for a long time,” explained Dr. Ukaga. “It coincided with our comprehensive plan with the county, the city, and the whole idea to make Austin a food security capital. Out of all that, this is the first tangible project. I believe in projects you can drive by, things you can see. This is the first tangible project, but it is not the last.”

This collaborative spirit reinforces Austin’s position as a regional center for agriculture, food science, and technological innovation. By integrating local government goals, regional business needs, and higher education resources, projects like the LAND Lab help build a stronger foundation for our area’s future.

What is the LandLAB?

The RiverLAND Lab (or LAND Lab for short) serves as an interactive bridge connecting Riverland Community College directly with the community while bringing community expertise back onto campus. Unlike traditional classroom environments, the LAND Lab provides students with direct, hands-on experience in agricultural science, environmental management, and laboratory procedures.

Key features and goals of the LAND Lab include:
• Real-World Laboratory Space: Students engage with modern scientific techniques in outdoor and applied settings, supplementing classroom instruction with direct field experience.
• Hands-On Education: The LAND Lab is designed to serve students studying agricultural sciences, biotechnology, and other fields connected to regional career opportunities.
• Community and College Synergy: The facility acts as an open door, inviting local industry partners, producers, and community members to engage directly with educational programming.

Through this facility, Riverland Community College gives students the opportunity to see the immediate, real-world applications of their studies. This hands-on experience helps prepare graduates to enter the regional workforce with practical skills and knowledge.

Strengthening Our Regional Business Community

For business leaders and Chamber members across Austin and the surrounding 45-minute corridor, the success of Riverland’s programs directly impacts our region’s talent pipeline. Agriculture and food processing remain important economic drivers for Southern Minnesota. Equipping local students with modern, practical skills helps ensure that area businesses have access to a highly trained, local workforce.

Dr. Kathleen Linaker, president of Riverland Community College, further emphasized the importance of collaboration during yesterday’s event:

“The LAND Lab is the result of a powerful collective effort, bringing together community leaders and business partners who share a commitment to creating meaningful impact. We really appreciate your time and effort in helping us make this a reality.”

This collaborative model reflects the core mission of the Austin Area Chamber of Commerce: fostering an environment where business, education, and community initiatives can thrive side by side.

Looking Ahead

The one-year anniversary of the LAND Lab is a milestone worth celebrating, but as campus leaders noted, it is only the beginning. As the lab continues to grow, it has the potential to serve as a lasting point of pride and a hub for regional innovation for years to come.

We encourage Chamber members, local business leaders, and area residents to stay connected with Riverland Community College, explore its expanding programs, and learn more about the LAND Lab and the opportunities it provides for students and the community.
