for local office seekers

The Chamber is offering an informational seminar for anyone interested in running for local, elected office. If this is you, you're encouraged to attend.

Austin City Council Chambers
4:00-6:00 p.m.

Hosted by the Chamber's Government Affairs Committee, the program will provide a well-rounded look at what to expect when you run for elected office. Officials from the City, County, and School District will provide an overview of offices open for election, how to file for those offices and what to expect once elected. Current office holders (not up for re-election) will share their personal perspectives on campaigning, as well as how they balance personal, professional and elected responsibilities. Media professionals will share their plans dor pre-election coverage and provide tips as to how to effectively work with reporters and other media representatives. A question and answer period will follow the presentations.

The filing period for local elected offices, this year, is May 22-June 5. Three seats on the Austin School Board, two seats on the Mower County Board of Commissioners and five seats on the Austin City Council, including Mayor, are up for election, November 6. All are four year terms.

The seminar is being offered free of charge as a public service by the Chamber, and is co-sponsored by KAUS AM/FM Radio and the Austin Daily Herald. Materials will be provided. Pre-registration is encouraged, but not required. Call the Chamber at 437-4561 to pre-register or for additional information.

Hormel makes top 20 of Corporate Citizens list for fourth straight year. The Hormel Foods Corporation jumped 11 spots to No. 19 and was the top Minnesota company named to the 13th annual Corporate Responsibilty Magazine "100 Best Corporate Citizens" list. This is the fourth consecutive year the magazine recognized Hormel, ranking No. 30 in 2011 and No. 40 in both 2009 and 2010.

JD Power ranks Edward Jones highest in investor satisfaction. For the sixth year out of the past eight, financial-services firm Edward Jones ranks highest in investor satisfaction with full service brokerage firms, according to J.D. Power and Associates 2012 Full Service Investor Satisfaction Study. The study measures overall investor satisfaction with full service investment firms based on seven factors: investment advisor, investment performance, account information, account offerings, commissions and fees, website and problem resolution.

Marco receives Perfect Image Award. Marco, Inc. recently received two 2012 Perfect Image Awards from imageSource Magazine at the ITEX National Expo & Conference in Las Vegas on April 18th. Marco received the 2012 award for Dealer of the Year and Outstanding Managed Services Program. The imageSource Perfect Image Award recipients are selected from an impartial judginf process based on a variety of factors and entry information acquired regarding a dealer's business model and performance.

2012-13 Leadership Austin Applications now available. The mission of Leadership Austin is to enhance our community through the development, empowerment and motivation of emerging leaders.

OBJECTIVES

  1. To raise awareness as to the needs and opportunities for community leadership
  2. To provide comprehensive training that will enhance an individual’s ability to lead in the community and workplace.
  3. To provide in-depth information about key sectors within our community
  4. To introduce and network participants with current and emerging leaders throughout our community
  5. To motivate participants to commit their time and expertise toward building a better community

Board of Equalization Hearings Scheduled. All commercial property in Mower County was recently reappraised by an outside firm, contracted by the county, Vanguard Appraisals. Property oweners who wish to challenge their assessments should note tow dates:

  1. The Board of Equalization for the City of Austin will be held 9 a.m. Monday, April 23 in the commissioner's board room in the lower level of the Mower County courthouse. No pre-reigstration is required, but anyone who wishes to shallenge their assessments should attend this meeting and request a ruling. Bring supporting information for your arguments to present to the Board.
  2. Appeals of the Board of Equalization can then be taken directly to the Board if Commissioners at a county equalization meeting scheduled for 6 p.m. June 11 in the courthouse. You are required to first attend the Board of Equaization meeting before scheduling a hearing before commissioners. Call 437-9549 to schedule a time to present to the Board.

Validations affect the amount of property taxes you will pay in 2013. Commercial property is assessed at a higher rate than other types of property, and higher valuations will shift more of the overall tax burden on to commercial property owners.

Riverland Offers free training program in green technologies. Manufacturing company employees, dislocated workers, and students in manufacturing related programs all qualify for this unique program. GreenPower's curriculum focuses on topics including sustainable manufacturing; energy efficiency; water conservation, reuse and recycling; designing for the environment and how different pollutants affect it. The 48 hours of training consists of six eight-hour classes. Graduates are also eligible for up to $5,000 in continuing education funds if they successfully complete the SME test and an education plan approved by the Blue Green Alliance. Report Recommends Changes in Public Workforce Pay. Minnesota public employee compensation is largely out of sync with the private sector and threatens the sustainability of public services, according to a report released December 9 by the Minnesota Chamber of Commerce and NAIOP Minnesota, the Commercial Real Estate Development Association. Several elements of public employee compensation must be reined in and reformed to ensure that governments can continue to deliver quality services and fulfill obligations in a cost-effective manner.
